Fern Rock Nature Trail - Loyalsock State Forest
The Fern Rock Nature Trial is an easy 2.3 mile hike with a 170 feet elevation gain and is a real joy every step of the way. Along this trail there are streams, wetlands, wildlife, mushrooms and beautiful Ketchum Run with waterfalls and cascades.

The Trail
The Fern Rock Nature Trial is a great experience for kids and adults alike. The trails are kept up very well and the bridges are built well. Along the trail there are 31 stations, with numbered markers, each with educational facts about the area. Be sure to print out a copy of the trail guide because the trail head does not always have copies available.

One thing that I absolutely love about this trail is how diverse the terrain is. One minute you are walking among saplings and the next your surrounded by older trees with moss covering the ground.

Gear
Make no mistake, even though this is a relatively easy hike please make sure you have the proper gear. A good pair of hiking boots is a must, there are some very rocky areas and it is very easy to twist an ankle if you're not careful. Walking poles or walking stick is also a good idea while on this hike. And by far, the most important piece of gear to have with you, is a camera of course!
Conclusion
It had been 6 years since I returned to the Fern Rock Nature Trial and honestly I don't know why it took so long to go back. This trail is so diverse there is so much to photograph through out the year. I look forward to my next trip to the area.
